What is a bed bank?

Also called: hotel wholesaler · hotel bed bank

Definition

A bed bank is a hotel wholesaler that buys or contracts room inventory from hotels in bulk and resells it at net rates to travel agencies, OTAs and tour operators, usually through an API. Bed banks give sellers access to hundreds of thousands of hotels without contracting each one.

How bed banks fit the distribution chain

Hotels give bed banks discounted or allocated rooms in return for reach. The bed bank adds its margin and distributes the rooms to thousands of sellers worldwide. Sellers then add their own markup for travellers. Well-known global bed banks include Hotelbeds and WebBeds; many regional ones specialise in particular destinations.

Working with several bed banks

Prices for the same room differ between bed banks, so sellers connect to several and compare. That is what creates the duplicate-hotel problem that hotel mapping solves.

Example

An agency in Riyadh connects to three bed banks. For a Paris hotel, one offers the room at €142, another at €138 and a third at €151; the booking engine shows €138 plus the agency’s markup.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bed bank the same as an OTA?

No. An OTA sells to travellers. A bed bank sells wholesale to travel businesses, which then sell to travellers.
