What is a channel manager?

Also called: hotel channel manager

Definition

A channel manager is software that hotels use to publish their room availability and rates to many online sales channels — OTAs, bed banks, GDSs and their own website — and keep them all in sync. When a room is booked on one channel, the channel manager updates availability everywhere else.

Channel manager versus booking engine

The two are often confused. A hotel’s channel manager pushes one hotel’s inventory out to many channels. A travel booking engine pulls many hotels’ inventory in from many suppliers so a seller can sell them. Hotels use channel managers; agencies, OTAs and DMCs use booking engines.

Example

A resort updates its rates once in its channel manager; the new prices appear on three OTAs, two bed banks and its own website within minutes.

How TraveleXe handles channel manager

For DMCs and suppliers that hold their own contracted inventory, Invento holds rates, seasons and allotments once and distributes them to every sales channel.
