Why the same hotel appears many times
A booking engine connected to several bed banks receives the same hotel from each of them — with slightly different names ("Hilton Dubai Creek" versus "Hilton Creek Hotel"), different addresses, coordinates and supplier codes. Without mapping, all of them appear as separate results, prices cannot be compared, and the experience looks broken.
How hotel mapping is done
- Compare names, addresses, postcodes, coordinates, phone numbers and star ratings across suppliers.
- Score how likely two records are the same property; machine learning is now standard for this.
- Assign one master hotel identifier and link every supplier code to it.
- Keep re-mapping as suppliers add, rename and remove properties.
Hotel mapping versus room mapping
Hotel mapping matches properties. Room mapping goes a level deeper and matches room types and rate plans, so a "Deluxe King" from one supplier and a "Deluxe Room – 1 King Bed" from another are recognised as the same product.
Example
An OTA connected to five suppliers receives 1.4 million hotel records. After mapping, they resolve to roughly 600,000 real properties, and each search shows every hotel once with its cheapest rate.

How accurate does hotel mapping need to be?
Very. A wrong match shows a traveller the wrong hotel; a missed match shows duplicates. Good systems combine automatic matching with review of uncertain cases.
Can I map hotels myself?
For a handful of suppliers, manual mapping is possible but slow. Beyond a few thousand properties per supplier, automated mapping is the only practical approach.
