What is a net rate?

Also called: net price · wholesale rate

Definition

A net rate is the price a supplier charges a travel company before any markup — the wholesale cost of a hotel room, tour or transfer. The travel company adds its own markup to set the selling price, and the difference is its margin. Net rates are confidential and should never be shown to travellers.

Net rates versus commissionable rates

With a net rate, the seller decides the selling price. With a commissionable rate, the supplier sets the public price and pays the seller a percentage commission. Wholesalers, DMCs and B2B portals work mostly with net rates; retail agencies often see both.

Example

A bed bank offers a room at a net rate of $100. The agency adds a 15% markup and sells it to the traveller for $115.
