What is an OTA? (Online Travel Agency)

Definition

An online travel agency (OTA) is a company that sells travel — hotels, flights, packages, activities — to travellers through a website or app. OTAs either buy inventory at net rates and resell it, or earn commission from suppliers. Large examples include Booking.com and Expedia; thousands of smaller OTAs serve specific markets.

What an OTA needs technically

  • A booking engine connected to many suppliers.
  • Hotel mapping to avoid duplicate listings.
  • Fast search, clear pricing and a smooth checkout.
  • Payment handling, fraud checks and customer support tools.
  • Marketing technology: SEO, metasearch feeds and analytics.

Example

A regional OTA focused on Gulf travellers sells Middle East and Europe hotels and flights in Arabic and English, using several bed banks and a GDS behind one booking engine.
