What is room mapping?

Also called: room type mapping · rate plan mapping

Definition

Room mapping matches the room types and rate plans that different suppliers sell for the same hotel, so identical rooms are recognised as one product. It lets a booking engine compare prices for the same room across suppliers and show travellers a clean, de-duplicated room list.

Why rooms are harder than hotels

Suppliers describe rooms freely: bed type, view, size, meal plan and refundability are mixed into one text field, in different orders and languages. "DBL SUP SEA VIEW BB" and "Superior Double, Sea View, Breakfast" are the same room. Room mapping parses these descriptions into standard attributes and groups matching ones.

What it improves

  • Cheapest-price display per actual room, not per supplier label.
  • Fewer booking errors caused by choosing the wrong room type.
  • Cleaner room lists that convert better.

Example

For one hotel, four suppliers return 63 room offers. Room mapping groups them into 9 real room types, and the booking engine shows the lowest price for each.
