What is a stop sale?

Also called: free sale · stop-sell

Definition

A stop sale is a supplier’s instruction to stop selling a room type, product or date immediately, even if the seller still has allotment or free-sale rights. Hotels issue stop sales when they are full or want to hold rooms; sellers must apply them across every channel at once to avoid overbooking.

Why stop sales must be instant

If a stop sale reaches the B2B portal but not the outbound API, partners keep booking rooms that no longer exist, and the seller faces walked guests and penalties. Inventory systems apply a stop sale once and push it to every channel automatically.

Example

A hotel emails a stop sale for New Year’s Eve. The DMC enters it once and the date disappears from its portal, its XML API and its sales team’s quotes at the same time.
