What is a tour operator?

Definition

A tour operator is a company that designs travel packages — combining transport, accommodation, guides and activities — and sells them to travellers directly or through travel agents. Tour operators contract suppliers, set the itinerary and price, and are usually responsible for the trip being delivered as sold.

Tour operator, travel agent and DMC

A travel agent sells other companies’ products. A tour operator creates its own packages. A DMC delivers services on the ground in one destination, often for tour operators. Many businesses combine these roles.

Software tour operators rely on

  • Itinerary and quotation builder.
  • Departure and group management for fixed-date tours.
  • Supplier contracting and inventory.
  • Booking, payment schedules and documents.

Example

A tour operator in Kerala sells a fixed-departure 8-day backwater and hills tour each month, with guaranteed departures from six travellers.
